Halloween in America may be the largest cost-effective plug for the dentists of the world. About $1.2 billion is expected to be given out this Halloween. It is not that dentists need this unofficial holiday to encourage their business. Judging from the bills I receive, they are quite handsomely paid.
A couple of years ago I came across this bit of doggerel verse placed on a particular tombstone:
Here lies Dentist Brown.
He’s finally filled his last cavity.
Nevertheless, all you non-diabetics, enjoy your candy day…and your subsequent trips to the dentist.
Segue: In many European countries the day after Halloween is the important day to celebrate life not death. “All Saints Day” is a day to commemorate loved ones who have completed their brief stay in this earthly life and left their imprints upon the hearts of family and friends. Trips are made to the appropriate cemeteries, fresh flowers laid upon the graves, and fond memories brought to mind. It is not macabre or sorrowful. It is not a day for planting rising skeletons or fake tombstones in one’s front yard. It is somber, respectful, and even joyful.
Just a thought:
