District Governor Rick Reigner visited our club on Friday, July 31 and shared his goals for the year. One of his charges is for clubs to “tell their stories”. So here's one of our stories…

District Governor Rick Reigner recognizes one of our club's “Unsung Heroes” - Roscoe Stelford

At the meeting Roscoe stated he is appreciative of the recognition and of the club. He said he enjoys keeping the finances in order and he's always liked working with money. But there's more to the story ~ Here are a few of Roscoe's responses when asked about his position.

How long have you been the club treasurer?  I took over from Lynn Fiala, officially beginning with the Club's 2018-2019 Rotary year. I have now started my ninth year serving the Club in this role.

What are 3 of the greatest challenges?  As we all know, nothing with Rotary is ever challenging. 😊 However, if I had to pick three things, I would say the first is simply the volume of work. The Treasurer's role can keep life interesting, especially during the busier times of the Rotary year. Second, keeping up with member billing and the unique nature of each member's account. Between makeups, guests, and other adjustments, there is always something that needs attention. Finally, our recent transition to the new NOVA version of ClubRunner has been a bit of an adventure. Like everyone else, I am still learning the new system.

How has the job changed?  Technology has probably changed the position more than anything else. Much more information is now sent and received electronically. I did implement a check-writing software and adapted a spreadsheet I had previously developed while serving as Treasurer for other organizations, giving us a system that functions much like a traditional accounting program. The Club has also taken on several new initiatives over the years. The biggest has probably been the Jeep Car Raffle, which includes federal and state withholding for the prize winner. We also use Google Sheets to coordinate donor information for Christmas Clearing House. Overall, technology has significantly changed how we manage the Club's finances and support its many activities.

What can we do to make your job easier?  Prompt payment of dues and invoices is always helpful. Beyond that, a little forgiveness and some “gentle” reminders when a check isn’t sent out or a payment is missed will always be appreciated. Providing a heads up when something impactful may be coming my way is also very helpful.

In 5 words or less, why do you continue to do it?

Giving back through Club service

Anything else you want to say?  Serving as Treasurer is definitely a team effort. I want to recognize Ron Jarvis and his team for everything they do for the Club. Ron prepares our various tax returns and regulatory filings and serves as a trusted sounding board whenever questions arise. He brings a tremendous amount of historical knowledge and is always willing to share it.I would also like to recognize Lynn Fiala, who continues to play an important role by providing an independent review of the Club's financial records. Each month, I send her a copy of the books, and she reviews the bank reconciliations and financial records as an internal control to help ensure everything is accurate. Her continued involvement provides an additional level of accountability that benefits the entire Club. I also want to thank our current Club President, Jackie Speciale, for this recognition. It is greatly appreciated. I just have one favor to ask. Please be kind with the photo. We have a tradition at City Hall that if your picture is in the newspaper, you are responsible for buying ice cream for the staff. I would like to keep my dessert budget intact! 😊  Serving as Treasurer has been a rewarding way to contribute to a club that has such a positive impact on our community. While much of the work takes place behind the scenes, it is gratifying to know that my efforts help support the Club's many missions and allow our members to focus on serving others. It continues to be my privilege to be part of that effort.  Rotary also aligns very well with my day job, which is helping make Woodstock the very best community it can be!!
