Pertinent info from last weeks bulletin was left for a re-read as it is an important bit of information. So on to this week. Pay attention to meeting location change in April as we will be going back to the Woodstock Country Club. I believe the first meeting there will be April 7. First Friday will be at Kishwaukee Brewing not this week, but next. Hopefully the weather will be warming up and we can see some sunshine as we socialize. The Santa Hut Committe met last night and we are moving ahead with building plans. A tentative budget of $32,000 has been agreed to. This budget was created using cost amounts for materials at full price. We will be working to obtain donated and discounted materials to lower the actual cost. In addition, we will be writing grant requests and doing some monetary donation work to cover the cost of the new building. We have contracted for a tandem axle trailer that the hut will be permanently constructed on so as to be easily moved and actually could be part of the Christmas Parade. The new hut will be ADA accessable via a railed ramp that will be used by all who enter the hut. Adequate insulation will be used in the floor, walls and ceiling to keep Santa's feet warm and allow for a comfortable interior temperature. Larger windows will be used to allow for window peeking by the public. Once the trailer arrives, we will be able to collect the building supplies and start building. The April 23, 2023 Rotary Magazine contained an interesting article concerning the efforts, extended by woman in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the two remaining countries where wild polio virus still exists, to vaccinate the population. This is not a safe job, but since men are not allowed to enter homes the access to vaccinate has to be a job for the woman. As a side benefit to the program set up, the participating woman are paid a salary which results in them contributing to the house-hold income, which gives them more power in decision making and is leading to better opportunities for work outside of the home. This opportunity allows for increased respect for the women in their countries. Country Ramblings: Eagles are sitting on eggs, the local birds are back including the Blue Birds, Redwing Black Birds and Robins. The Gold finches are turning yellow again and the Morning Doves nesting. The Cardinal and Redwing males are advertising for a mate. Spring can't be too far away. A few more days of frost and we will once again be able to sit outside in the sun. Friday at Oliver's. |
