Country Ramblings The days are comfortable and the nights are turning chilly. Feels like the middle of September already. Most of the baby birds are long fledged, but the Goldfinches are just nesting. Then wait till the milkweed and thistles all have dry seeds so they have plenty of food for the new hatchlings. This year has seen a big upswing in the Monarch butterfly population. Good news for the environment. The Sand Hill Cranes will soon be heard heading south with the Geese close behind. Keep ypur bird feeders full and watch for the migrating song birds stopping for a snack on their trip south. And get out there and enjoy the weather. I had a chance to help the defenders with their styroform recycling program last week. I didn't know that service was available. All clean styroform can be taken to the plastic tent in the back of the City of Woodstock's street department on Washington St. Once a week the collected material is sorted, bagged, and trucked to a recycling plant in Crystal Lake. So keep it out of the garbage and drop it off at the collection site.
