I'm just catching up to this month's Rotary magazine which is about the 2024 International Convention hosted in Singapore. The header at the bottom was "Singapore Swing" which I read as Singapore Sling. I have heard of the Singapore Sling, but didn't know anything about it. I skimmed the article but did not see any reference to a Singapore Sling, so I turned to the internet, which is never wrong, to pursue a rabbit hole Google search on the Singapore Sling and then the Raffles Hotel. I view this as helpful research to support our future District Governor.
The drink was developed sometime before 1915 by Ngiam Tong Boon a bartender at the Long Bar in the Raffles Hotel. Although it is said, no published recipe is the same. The current recipe is pulled from notes left at the time and the memories of the bartenders. In the 1980s in the US, the cocktail made with fresh ingredients was replaced by prefab drink mixes and slushy drinks. The Singapore Sling was originally called a gin sling, and there are variations of it including the Chinatown Sling and the Straits Sling.
According to Liquour.com the recipe for a Singapore Sling is:
3/4 ounce gin
1/4 ounce Benedictine
1/4 ounce Grand Marnier
1/4 ounce Heering cherry liqueur
1 ounce pineapple juice
1/2 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed
1 dash Angostura bitters
Club soda, chilled, to top
Garnish: orange slice
Garnish: cherry
