Christmas Clearing House

For more than 50 years, the Rotary Club and Christmas Clearing House ensured everyone in our community has a Merry Christmas. This year more than 1,200 families will receive food and toy bags delivered directly to their homes.

This is a community effort and it takes the community to make is a success. We need you.

Some of the ways to help -

Volunteer to Deliver - On Saturday, December 16, starting at 8:30, hundreds of volunteers will come to our Christmas Clearing House warehouse at 1191 Lake Ave (next to Walmart) to pick up and deliver food and toys.  We go until we are done.

Donate - We need your financial support to make this a success. This year, our expenses have gone up and we need to raise $90,000 to meet the needs of our community. Please consider making a donation today. You can make your donation online here or checks made payable to Christmas Clearing House can be mailed to PO Box 53, Woodstock, IL 60098

The vocational scholarship is to provide educational opportunities for men and women who are preparing for careers that require LESS THAN A FOUR-YEAR DEGREE (Associate Degree, Diploma or Certificate) in order to enter into those careers and become successful and productive. Scholarships will be awarded to full-time students enrolled in a vocational degree or certificate program at an accredited school. This award will be used for tuition only, NOT for fees, books, tools, supplies, food, travel or personal expense.  The duration of the scholarship will be one year and all funds from the scholarship will be paid directly to the institution they choose to attend.

Students must claim funds for the fall, spring or summer semester(s) in the year they won.  Students are to submit enrollment notification and tuition bill immediately after registration.

Literacy Committee

Each month the literacy committee purchases children's books from the Environmental Defenders to offer families who come to the Food Truck at St. Ann's church in Woodstock. The need has increased, helping over 190 families the last time. The books we buy each month only allows us to offer them to 40-50 families.

We give out books to children from toddler to tween. Do you have books your children or grandchildren are no longer interested in? Donate them to us by bringing them to our Rotary meetings throughout the month of April. Jean and Lynn will collect them each week.

April Fool's Day

April Fool's Day is an annual custom on 1 April consisting of practical jokes and hoaxes. Jokesters often expose their actions by shouting "April Fools!" at the recipient. Mass media can be involved in these pranks, which may be revealed as such the following day.

Confession - Back when I was a young teen, I wound a rubber band on the kitchen hose sprayer so when you turned on the faucet it sprayed.  I thought it was pretty funny, but my mom didn’t think so!!  She got back at me the next year when she fixed me French toast for breakfast but had wrapped the bread in gauze so I couldn’t cut through it  What April Fool prank have you done?

Christmas Clearing House

For more than 50 years, The Rotary Club of Woodstock has been providing food baskets, toys and books a Saturday prior to the Christmas holiday to families located within District 200.

In the first year, 200 families in the community were served. With the growth of the community coupled with an increase in family hardships, The Rotary Club of Woodstock is now serving approximately 1,100 families & 2,000 children residing in the Woodstock and Wonder Lake areas each year.

And our community responds to this recurring need during the holiday season. In a matter of hours, hundreds of volunteers average 7 deliveries per minute showing Woodstock Cares!

2021 Delivery Day is scheduled for Saturday, December 18th.

You can click on the CCH logo photo to go to the Woodstock Rotary Cares website (https://www.woodstockrotarycares.org) for updated information.

A Peaceful Transition of Power

In just two weeks we will witness the peaceful transition of power from current President Marlene to next President Mimi (pictured here in her food truck outfit staring at a squash butt with Shelia.) And yes the picture is sideways.

To celebrate this we will be gathering at Porkies on Friday, June 26 - which should be day 1 of Phase 4, which coincides with the swallows returning to San Juan Capistrano. You will need to let Mimi know if you are planning to come and how many people.  She has also arranged for take out orders if you want to participate from afar.  They have a tent set up and an outside bar.  There is good internet connection so we will be zooming the meeting.  More to come.

Good works creates immunity to COVID—-19

That’s the key to beating COVID-19. So far I am not aware of any members of our club that have contracted the COVID-19 virus. It must be the good works that our fellow members continue to do for our community that has enabled us to develop a natural immunity to the virus. Service above self must be the key to maintaining a strong immune system that allows us to fight off the effects of  the virus.

Just in case this is not the reason that we have all been able to remain healthy,   I have a U-Tube presentation that was developed by a Woodstock physician specializing in Functional Medicine. This is a  presentation that focuses on the way to strengthen our immune systems to better enable us to fight off the  Corona Virus as well as other viruses that are constantly attacking our bodies.   This is not meant to be a political presentation or an  advertisement for Doctor Iduna. It is for the purpose of understanding the mechanism by which the Corona and other viruses work.   Here is the link to view the YouTube
http://youtu.be/aJ1eCCq7HqM.    It’s called Boosting Your Immune System.

Happy New Year

I would like to wish all our members a Happy New Year filled with happiness and love for all of those we hold dear to us.
New Year’s Day is a time to look back at the old year and see how we can make the new year even better than the last one. It is time to make resolutions for the coming year to make ourselves better people and better Rotarian’s. It is also a time to make a resolution to  actually fulfill our resolutions and not to give up on them before the end of January.
My suggestion is to keep your resolutions within reason so you have a chance of keeping them. Another suggestion is to inform our spouses of our resolutions so that we will be given constant reminders in a timely and maybe not so friendly manner.
One good resolution would be to look at the “Spinning Wheel” every week especially for the next two months so you will know where you are going when you head for the next rotating meeting. A lot of us have a car that is on auto pilot and it automatically goes to the Country club every Friday at 12 noon. If this is the case for you, you better reprogram your GPS in you brain to manual control and check the bulletin to get to the correct meeting place.
Happy New Year William Schuberth 2020-01-01 06:00:00Z 0

Rotary Meeting Places

For the next 6-8 weeks our Rotary club will truly be a Rotary Club in the original sense of the word. Starting this Friday January 3, 2020 our club will be a traveling club. Our meeting places will be blowing in the wind so to speak. This Friday our meeting will be held at the Moose club here in Woodstock at the regular time.  Next week will be announced at the next meeting and in next week’s bulletin, so it would be a good idea to keep reading the bulletin so you will know where to go for the meetings.  I know from experience it is not fun to pull up to the Country Club and see an empty parking lot.

It is with great sorrow that I report that a long time Morning Rotary Club member passed away this last Sunday.  Bob was a great person and a very active member both in the Rotary as well as our Woodstock community. Woodstock as well as Rotary will miss him dearly.

Next event is Weekend in Woodstock.  Contact Garret for information and opportunities to help.  It will come quickly.

ClubRunner Application

Posted on May 15, 2019
I am sure most of our members already have the ClubRunner application on their smart phones since it has been discussed on several occasions.  Just in case there are few members who haven't downloaded the application, I just want to highlight one of the benefits.  The application has a current photo listing of members and when you touch the name/photo, it will provide the member's address and phone numbers.  You can then touch the phone number and call the member.  No need to remember phone numbers and the listing is as up to date.  One little caveat that Chris Cantwell discovered, you need to touch the refresh button (see red circle on photo) to verify the information is current.

Friday Fun!

Friday Fun!

This past Friday was a day of Rotary Fun. We kicked off the day with a field trip to the Moose for lunch. Laura lead a team building activity for our program focused on our classifications. Our table had a great conversation on our careers. We learned from Larry that realtors work much harder and make much less than what we thought. (We also learned that Larry only takes jobs that are on Cass St. Which you would thinking would be limiting, but he has made a success of that.) We also learned that Steve may be a little jaded with our State's political process at the moment.

I'm confident that it was equally eye opening for Kent & Luke to learn about each other's careers.

It was a fun way for us to continue to learn about our fellow Rotarians.

Later that evening was First Friday at Scorched Earth. Rotarians enjoyed beer, pierogis and fellowship with Rotarians and their friends and families.

As a club we do a lot in and for the community - but what makes this club great is the fellowship. Thank you to Laura for organizing a great Friday, thank you to all who came and those who didn't make it this month. You were missed.

ATTENTION!  IT IS VALENTINES DAY!

Posted on Feb 14, 2019

It is not too late!

I waited on purpose to send the bulletin today.  Why do Skunks love Valentine’s Day?
And what’s this Galentines Day thing going around?!?  Is this a sub set of Valentine's Day?  Anyway, Valentine’s Day is for Women and Men.  Guys and Gals.  Boys and Girls.

Valentine’s Day Facts And Trivia

According to statistics, 73% of Valentine’s Day flowers are bought by men (come on Ladies, we enjoy receiving cards too!).
Each year around 1 billion Valentine cards are sent across the world (did you send yours?).
Passing out Valentines is a 600-year-old tradition (that's older than me).
Valentine's Day started with the Romans (not the Germans...).
Both men and women prefer to receive chocolate over flowers, according to the National Confectioners Association. The survey also found that chocolate sales represent 75% or more of Valentine's Day candy purchases.  (my #1 choice- Peanut M&Ms)
And the answer is:  Because they are Scentimental.

Thomas has moved!

Thomas has moved to his new host family, the Scheibes.  The contact information is listed above. They have two sons, one who is in college and the other is Bartek who attends Woodstock North High School with Thomas. Both Thomas and Bartek played soccer for the Thunder this last fall.

Please find time to spend a couple of hours with Thomas.  It doesn’t matter whether it is dinner out, dinner at your home, visit your business or help transport him to a Rotary District event.  You won’t regret the time with this impressive young man!

Let The World Know What Rotary Does

Posted by William Schuberth on Oct 03, 2018
I noticed an interesting article in the October “Rotarian” and would like to share it with you. It was titled ‘’Plant an Isssue”. If we want to become better known for all the good things we Rotarians do this  is one way to help get the word out. Each of our 1.2 million members can easily help with this effort with very little energy expended. After reading (or receiving for those who don’t have time to read it) each of us could “plant” our copy where others could enjoy it. It might go in a medical office or hospital, a coffee shop, the local library, an exercise facility, our own business’s waiting room, or any setting where people wait for appointments. If you worry about your name on the magazine, black it out before planting it. This allows us to get the word out without having to appear to be bragging about all the good things Rotary does.

Nashville A Big Surprise

Posted by William Schuberth on Oct 03, 2018
Nashville Tennessee turned out to be a big surprise for Ron Jarvis last week. Ron was going to make up at the Nashville club so he called to confirm that the the meeting would be at the Wild Horse Cafe. The phone was answered by a receptionist and he was informed that the meeting was being held as scheduled. The cost of the buffet was $30 per person. Upon arriving he found that the name badges for the members were bar coded. When he sat down at a table and introduced himself as a CPA and started to talk to one of the members he was informed that the club has 597 members.  It is the 3rd largest club in the U.S.  and usually they have about 250 members at a meeting.  The speaker was the mayor of Memphis. Needless to say Ron was quite surprised by the size of the club in Nashville. Who would have thought there would be a club that big in Nashville or anywhere for that matter.

First Friday social is next Friday May 4th.  Ortmanns.  Will be fun.  Bring your Bestie (I read that word here in the bulletin and/or Rotary emails, so I thought I would use it).  Might be a birthday celebration that day...

I think the buffet is working great!  Delicious.  Remember, Buffet is French for:  Get it yourself.  HaHaHa good thing I'm not French because I really like the buffet selection and the extra steps.

And hey, Big Thanks to Fitbit.  They have made my inefficiencies look like I'm really productive (more steps!).

Triangle Clean-Up

Posted by William Schuberth on Apr 18, 2018
The Rotary Triangle Park is in need of a Spring cleaning and touch up. Larry Hansen has been doing an outstanding job upholding the good name of  Rotary by keeping the small park in great shape with a limited number of hands  to help him. It would be nice to see a big turnout to make the work a very short project  that could end with lunch and a refreshing drink. We could also reinstate an old theme like stuffing as many people as possible  into a phone booth as possible. If we all show up we could probably get into the Guiness Book of world records for the most people in Triangle Park at one time. Our club membership could probably fill up the entire park. Please join Larry Hansen and other Rotarians for our clean up the Rotary Triangle, starting at 7:00AM on Saturday April 28th.  Remember many hands makes light work!

If you want more details, contact Larry!

Homeless Teenager From France  Needs Family

Posted by William Schuberth on Apr 18, 2018
Chris Cantrell is asking all Rotarians and their friends to help him find a place for a currently homeless boy from France. That's right. Our club has agreed to take an exchange student for the upcoming year, but at the present time Chris has not been able to have anyone volunteer to be a host family. THOMAS DI FAZIO FROM LYON, FRANCE WILL BE 16 YEARS OLD WHEN HE IS SUPPOSED TO ARRIVE IN THIS COUNTRY IN EARLY AUGUST. THE RULES FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS REQUIRE THAT THEY HAVE A HOST FAMILY BEFORE THEY CAN APPLY FOR A VISA. THOMAS IS REPORTED TO BE FLUENT IN ENGLISH AND IS VERY OUTGOING. HE SHOULD BE A REAL PRIZE AS AN EXCHANGE STUDENT. THE SCHOOL HE ATTENDS WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE FIRST HOST FAMILY.
Linda and I have hosted several exchange students and they have greatly enriched the lives of our family. This June we will be going to Austria to visit with a former exchange student that we hosted about 30 years ago. He now has 3 children, two in college and one in high school. He and his family and our family have visited each other several times.
For those who have never hosted an exchange student, have no fear, these kids are screened before they are chosen to represent their country's and home towns as ambassadors.  They often make great big brothers or sisters. Think of it this way......Raising teenagers can be a challenge so think about hosting an exchange student so you can practice on them before you screw up your own teenagers.
Think of hosting a student not as a responsibility and chore but as an opportunity to enrich your life with an experience that  will give you wonderful memories for the rest of your life.
If you are interested in hosting or have a friend to whom you would like to offer such an opportunity, please call Chris Cantrell at 815-341-2916 at your earliest convenience.

Congratulations to Lloyd for becoming a grandfather of sorts. Of course the offspring didn't look like any other members of Lloyd's family. Four legs and a lot  of hair is what a goat is supposed to look like. I am sure your daughter in law was very grateful to have such a good Veterinarian on call.

News for the week

Busy time of year with many fund raisers and projects in the fire.  Top priority item is the Beach Party.  No excuses and running out of time.  Get it done what needs to be done and then save time to help decorate the day before the event Saturday, May 12. Try and schedule part of Friday the 11th for set up.

Our potted oak trees are due to arrive Friday the 20th of April.  Because they are in pots, they do not have to be planted immediately.  However, the planting  should occur as soon as the ground is dry enough to plant.  Anyone interested in helping with the planting please contact me.

The buffet idea for lunch seems to be going well.  I think everyone actually is seated with their food faster than the table service was allowing.  Please share your comments with Lori concerning the new food menu and the buffet service.

I hope Laura showed up at the correct meeting last Friday for our monthly club social.  I was planning to attend, but an emergency caesarian needed to be performed on my daughter-in- laws goat.  That took preference.  Doing surgery in an unheated barn is just not the same as having a well-lit, well heated surgery room.  Friday night was bad enough, but having to do another one at 3 AM on Sunday morning was a real cold project.  I went from the barn directly to the hot shower.  Mamas and babies are doing fine.  So the wonderful feeling of Grandpa being able to bring new life into the world far outweighs the cold  and numbed fingers.  So much for retirement.

Thought for the day:  Don't give up on Spring.  The tulips and daffodils are struggling to break ground and the hawks, owls and geese are all sitting on eggs.  Should be a good weekend to get outside.  Just "Do it!!!"

RYLA Now Accepting Applications

RYLA was established by Rotary International to build the next generation of future leaders for high school students who have demonstrated leadership skills or shown the potential to be leaders by their active participation in groups and/or organizations.  Students attending RYLA will be given an opportunity to explore and further develop these leadership skills. Participants will be involved in a 3-day program held at Edwards Camp & Conference Center in East Troy, Wisconsin on either one of two weekends held on March 8th - 11th or April 12th - 15th of 2018.  During the 3-day RYLA conference, students will explore their own leadership style, personal strengths, learn skills to help identify community needs and develop an appreciation for community service.

Our Club will sponsor five high school students to attend the 2018 RYLA Conference.  Sponsorship will cover costs for transportation, food, supplies, and camp housing. Any high school aged student living within the boundaries of Woodstock Consolidated District 200 is eligible to apply.

When is our next meeting???

Posted by William Schuberth on Dec 13, 2017
This is a quiz.  Our next meeting is on December 22, 2017. December 15  is a break to get ready and rest up and do final finishing touches for CCH. Please check the schedule for CCH included in this bulletin for warehouse times and D Day delivery times.  The program has changed so please read carefully the story in this bulletin. D Day will seem a little early this year as it is on December 16 instead of the Saturday before Christmas as it is usually held so we have a little more time to actually prepare for our own Christmas Day celebrations.  This coming Saturday should be a fun filled and rewarding day as we get to demonstrate or motto of "Service Above Self".  See you all there.

New bulletin writers

Posted on Dec 13, 2017
Finally our members will be spared from reading the same bulletin authors every 3 weeks. That's right we will now have 3 new bulletin writers so you will begin to see lots of variety in writing style. I believe the first new writer will come on line on January 5th to start out the new years first bulletin with a new author.  I am sure you can't wait to see it so I will not divulge the author of the first bulletin of the new year. It will be a surprise for most of you. It might even get you to read the bulletin to see how exciting it will become with new authors. I am sure you are all looking forward to the new year and the new bulletin writer.

May He Rest in Peace

Posted by William Schuberth on Nov 21, 2017
It is with a sad heart that I am adding this story to our weekly bulletin. I was notified by Denise that Jim Keefe passed away on Tuesday  November 21.  Some of you new members may not know Jim Keefe because he was not present for many meetings in the last two years. Jim Keefe was one of the charter members of our club. Without Jim Keefe there might not have even been a Woodstock Rotary Club. Jim was  a Rotarian not in name but in action. Jim was truly a good person. He was a good father. He was a good citizen who gave much back to his community  and Church and he was truly a good Rotarian who lived by the 4 Way Test. Jim was a role model for many members of the club. Our club will certainly  miss him. Jim provided energy and guidance and a unique form of leadership from the first day that the Woodstock Rotary Club was chartered until he passed away. I am sure his spirit will be watching over our club and guiding us into the future.  Lets all do our best to make Jim proud of the club he helped to found.

No Meeting This Friday

Posted by William Schuberth on Nov 21, 2017
Thats correct. There will be no meeting this Friday Nov. 24. Thats because many of us will be out shaking our cans to raise money for CCH. This is our public presentation and start off of our fund raising for CCH. There is much raised from other sources, but it is this public display of asking for help that gets our community tuned in to the CCH mentality. It also helps to remind people that they can also be a part of the event by both donating money as well as time in the warehouse and time helping to deliver  to the recipients. This is the day that sets the stage for CCH as far as the Woodstock community is concerned. We Rotarians know that the work for CCH started as soon as last years CCH delivery was completed . This is an event that involves  hundreds of volunteers  and approximately $50,000 in funds to successfully complete our CCH efforts, so get ready and enjoy your free day on Friday because you will make up for it in the next 3 weeks. Thank you all for being Rotarians and living jus to the motto of " Service Above Self".

Idle Time

Posted by William Schuberth on Oct 31, 2017
Just as I was ready zone out and relax for the evening and listen to more news of the awful event of the day in New York where a terrorist drove a truck into people on a bicycle path in New York City killing 8 persons and injuring at least 11 others I remembered some of my Rotarian responsibilities. We are lucky. As Rotarians we don't have to think about what to do with our free time.  We have already filled much of it up with good things to do for others. Coming into the holidays gives us one of our busiest seasons as Rotarians. When others are complaining about nothing to do we just have to look forward in our calendars and see that we have lot of things to do in our quest to perform " service above self".
When others are bored and feeling sorry for themselves our lives are filled with all sorts of activities like  "Tag Days", Christmas Clearing House, preparations for the upcoming dinner auction,  and an exciting evening with great friends at our first Friday Fireside meeting at Jackie Speciale's house  this coming Friday.  And for me, instead of zoning out this evening, I was lucky enough two get to communicate with all my fellow Rotarians by writing the bulletin for this week. As a thought for some of our more literate members if you are interested in seeing yourself in print Kent Luke and I would probably consider sharing some of the fun of publishing the weekly bulletin with another Rotarian or two.  Interested parties can apply in person or on line to our official publisher  Kent Frisbie. I am sure we could find a spot in our rotation for a qualified candidate.
So lets all keep doing good things for others because I personally believe that when w do good things for others it is one of the best ways to help us feel good about ourselves and our purpose here in this world.    Bill Schuberth

Hurricane Harvey

Posted by William Schuberth on Aug 28, 2017
This last weekend the great state of Texas was the recipient of one of the most devastating hurricanes in our history. Hurricane Harvey was not necessarily the most powerful hurricane in history, but it will go down as one of the most damaging hurricanes in history. When Hurricane Harvey hit land it did not dissipated and wither away. It seemed to get stuck and parked itself over a 300 mile area of the gulf coastal lowland area of Texas where it continued to dump torrential rains on the coastal areas of Texas. From 10 to 50 inches of rain was recorded in the affected areas. It is now preparing to make a turn and move back over Galveston to give it another dose of torrential rainfall. The people of Texas and the surrounding areas will be in need of all the help they can get, both financial and physical help to clean up after the storm.  Our District 6440 will be accepting donations thru its Charitable Fund and will be distributing the funds via Rotary clubs in the hurricane area and as usual Rotary will have feet on the ground to insure the moneys will be used wisely and distributed in a fair and efficient manner. Donations can be made by going on the District 6440 website and clicking on the Charitable Fund listing, on the fund there will be a listing for Hurricane Harvey, click on that and make any donations you feel are appropriated. All donations to the Charitable Fund are tax deductible.

Hail the New President

Posted by William Schuberth on Jul 18, 2017
I think a word of praise is due for our new president.  Laurie Lewandowski did an outstanding job on her first official meeting as the new president of our club. She was able to take the podium and exude leadership even though she had to do it without the benefit of a previously published bulletin for the week.Laurie, if you can survive your first meeting without the help of a bulletin that is very thinly read you should be able to face anything that comes up in the next year.  I especially like your take on clean drinking water. When looked at it in a global way it all comes down to having good toilets and a well designed disposal system otherwise it all gets recycled again and in this case recycling is not such a good thing.  Enjoy your year as president. I am sure you will do an outstanding job in leading our club into the future. Thank you for your time and effort.

Rotary Road Trip to Miller Park

Posted by William Schuberth on Jun 26, 2017
Saturday July 29 is the date of the event. Brewers vs Cubs Including tailgate party and lots of fun with your fellow Rotarians  and helping a number of veterans to enjoy a day out at the ball park which they rarely get to do. Word has it that there are still some tickets available. There was a suggestion of getting a bus to go to the game as a group.  I have been told by Mike Iwanicki that  he was able to get the Veterans Assistance Commission to provide two busses for the event. Each bus can transport 12-13 persons. The best thing about it is that there will be no official cost for the use of the buses which will be provided by PACE, however it is suggested that riders make a donation to the drivers of the bus because they are volunteering to do this without pay.
The pick up place for the bus rides will be announced at a later day so keep reading your bulletin for updates on the event.

Memorial Day Review

Posted by William Schuberth on May 31, 2017
I hope everyone had a nice week end over Memorial Day. The weather turned out really nice with sunshine and a brisk breeze. While I was attending the Memorial Day presentation in Williams Bay, Wisconsin on Monday I was greeted by some people at the ceremony who wished me a Happy Memorial Day. That was nice until I listened to the presentation  and realized that wishing someone a happy Memorial Day was not exactly what Memorial Day is all about.  Memorial Day is a day set aside to give thanks and to honor those soldiers and public servants such as firemen and policemen and their families who have given their lives as the ultimate sacrifice in service to others. It is a day to pay reverence to those who have given all they could so that we could enjoy the the freedoms that we often take for granted in our country. We have the greatest country in the world and enjoy more freedoms than any other country in the world. We enjoy freedom of speech, freedom of religion,  freedom to express ourselves, freedom to seek employment of our choosing, and freedom to move about in our country without being detained because of race, religion, or sex and we have the freedom to vote for those representatives who we feel will most properly represent us and our ideals so that we will continue to be able to enjoy those freedoms we take for granted. Remember Memorial Day is not just a long weekend that starts of the summer of fun, it is a day to take a moment to give thanks for those who gave their lives to make these things possible for us to enjoy.

Barry Goldberg, I Will Miss You

Posted by William Schuberth on Mar 28, 2017
On Monday March 27 2017 Barry Goldberg passed away.  Barry was a member of our club for over 10 years. Jack Kise introduced Barry to our Rotary club by inviting him to join in on our Christmas Clearing House project. Barry became ill about two years ago and was unable to keep up his membership. His amazing dry sense of humor will be missed by  our members and especially by Linda and me. Barry was not only a good friend of ours, he was also the grandfather  of my daughter-in-law Marielle and the great grandfather of my grandchildren Mia and Lukas. Barry also became an ordained minister thru the internet and officiated at the marriage of my son David and his granddaughter Marielle.
Memorial services will be held at the  Schneider-Leucht-Merwin and Cooney Funeral Home on Seminary Ave. in Woodstock beginning at 10:00 AM on Thursday March 30.

Culver's Friday Night Fundraiser

Posted by William Schuberth on Mar 28, 2017
Last Friday appeared to be a successful fundraiser for our Interact Club. I arrived there about 7 PM and there were quite a few people there supporting o9ur Interact Club. I met Paul Gerahardt ate the door when I got there  and we had a delightful dinner and some good conversation. It was really nice to get to know the other members a little better on a one on one basis and still be able to help our Rotary effort. I certainly hope our others members had as good a time as I did.

The student schedules are really packed full of things to do. Be sure to reset the GPS system in your mind so your car doesn't automatically go to the Country Club like my car usually does. New Years Resolutions!!!!

Posted by William Schuberth on Jan 09, 2017
It is  now the second week of the New Year.  How many of us well meaning rotarians have already managed to default on our resolutions for new year?  You don't have to punish yourself, but it might be time to take a second look at what you resolved to do for the new year. Its not to late to change it to something more doable or to get back on the track and start living up to your promises you made to yourself.

Habitat For Humanity

Posted by William Schuberth on Jan 09, 2017
Last Friday we were treated to a great program by Barb Swanson. It was pretty exciting to learn how this organization works and is able to provide housing to deserving persons who are just below the level of doing it all on their own. Habitat lends a hand to persons who are financially challenged, so that they will be able to afford to have a home of their own. It was interesting to hear about how ownership seems to reshape the way people sometimes think and act.  The old phrase " having some skin in the game" certainly seems  to be true of the people that Habitat helps. to keep the program sustainable the organization requires not only sweat equity of approximately 250 hours of hands on help, but they also have courses in the  how to of managing and maintaining your home, as well as some classes in money management. This would probably be a good idea for conventional lenders to offer to their clients also. Thank you Barb for a really great program.

Down with the old year and in with the  New Year!!!!

Posted by William Schuberth on Dec 20, 2016
This is the time of year when we look back to the old year and forward to the new year.  Here are some of the things we were told that were good for us.  Are if you agree.   EXERCISE could help your brain stay young and lower your chances of cancer. In a study involving 900 adults, those who did little or no regular physical activity experienced  cognitive decline equivalent to 10 more years of aging compared to their more active peers . CARBS may not be so bad after all. A study of more than 23,000 Italians found that those sho ate more pasta actually tended to have a lower body mass index. SEX may keep older people mentally sharp. a British study showed that the sexually active participants scored higher in memory test and other cognitive measures. They are looking for more volunteers for another study. Do you think they will have trouble finding volunteers? DIRT helps children stave off allergies. Being clean may not really be next to Godliness. BOOKS may make you live longer. A Yale study showed that those adults that read about 30 minutes daily actually lived about 2 years longer than the non readers. CUTTING CALORIES may improve your entire quality of life those in the study that reduce their caloric intake lost weight, slept better, were in better moods  and had an enhanced sex drive. They will probably be applying for the British sex study. FRIENDS AND FAMILY can be as important  to your health as diet and exercise.  I guess this depends on your friends and relatives.

Here are some things they said we were told to avoid.  ALCOHOL is even worse for us than we thought. Drinking now accounts  for more fatalities than overdoses from prescription pain killers and heroin combined. Other research  found that alcohol is a direct cause of at least  seven forms of cancer. Whatever happened to the two glasses of red wine?? OPIOIDS may do more harm than good. Prolonged use of opioids are believed to amplify pain signals from the spinal cord, prolonging and and even intensifying discomfort. DISTRACTED WALKING pedestrians deaths increased 10% in the first half 2015 believed to be caused by people walking into traffic while playing with their smart phones. So much for multi-tasking.MARIJUANA may take a long term toll on the mind. researchers  found that it reduces blood flow to the mind, Yeah!! but who really cares anyway. TRAMPOLINES are dangerous. Did they really have to do a study to find this out. This was probably a study done by a group of researchers while smoking a joint.

Moral of this information is that we should strive to do the good things and avoid the bad things then even if we don't live longer we will be so bored that it will seem like we are living longer.   ENJOY THE NEW YEAR AND BEHAVE YOURSELF.

HO! HO! HO! Christmas Clearing House is a success.

Posted by William Schuberth on Dec 20, 2016
Once again our club has stepped up to the plate and has been able to adapt to new surroundings for our CCH staging area. This year we were able to secure  a new warehouse for our CCH staging and it turned out to be one of the best  places yet to prepare for D Day. According to the latest report CCH was able to provide deliveries  of food clothing and toys for 914 families. 1441 children received  toys and will be able to have a real Christmas, that is if they wait until Christmas to receive their toys.  Deliveries started at approximately 7:30 AM and the last delivery vehicle left the warehouse at approximately 10:45 AM. There were fewer returns this year than in past years. There were also fewer recipients this year. Perhaps the economy is actually improving as our politicians have been telling us for most of this election year. If this keeps up maybe CCH will be put out of business. Wouldn't that be great if nobody in our community were in need of  financial help. It would be nice, but I think we will be doing CCH for quite some time but perhaps it won't be on such  a grand scale.

Jade Bellairs - Tumblr Report
 Update

 (Jade Bellairs with classmates)
Lately I’ve been questioning why I don’t truly feel settled in. Maybe it’s because I am moving host families in three weeks or so. Or maybe it’s because I feel a little left out during class, since I still don’t understand much. Whatever the case, it will be hard to feel at home when I am constantly moving around, so I do my best to cope with it. I went out with some Rotex for dinner and we went to a food court place in Kita Senju. It was really fun and we took a lot of pictures with the SNOW, and Snapchat filters. In ESS (English Speaking Society club) we began planning for a Halloween party. I was put on the game planning committee and we’ve thought of some pretty interesting games. I went to Akihabara with two of my exchange student friends from school and we walked around and played in game centers and took lots of purikura. We also ended up going to another cat cafe. They were so cute but they kept running away from us. I can understand why but still, I just want to pet them! The next day I went to Disney Sea with a large group of exchange students from districts all over Japan. There were about 18 of us altogether but we split off into smaller groups after the initial meet up. That day was so fun, but it was a lot of walking so my feet really hurt. Disney Sea is not nearly as big as Disney Land or Disney World in America. The rides are also kinda lame, but it was fun being with all the other exchange students. The sad part was when we had to leave Disney Sea. I probably wouldn’t see these people ever again so we were all super sad. On Tuesday the 4th I had to stay home because my stomach hurt really badly. I slept for 16 hours that day. On my next break, we had a Rotary field trip with district 2580 and we went to the Ueno Zoo, Asakusa, and the Tokyo Edo Museum. The zoo had a lot of cute animals and we got to see a panda! In Asakusa we all got our fortunes for 100 yen. I got bad fortune but not as bad as this other guys’. It said he was gonna be unlucky with basically everything in the future and that everything in his life is going to go wrong. Mine just said I don’t get along with others. Other than ours, everyone else got a good or normal fortune. The next day I went out with another exchange student friend from my school. We went to Shinjuku together and basically just walked around and did whatever we wanted. We took like 4 purikura and went to this cool fancy cafe. On the next Saturday we had tea ceremony practice. I could NOT get the turning right and the scary teacher kept yelling “NO!” at me and it wasn’t fun. The next day was a day off, so I slept for 14 hours and went out to dinner with Rotex in Ueno. My schools’ midterms began yesterday and I only have to take the English tests. When I am not taking a test, I am sitting in the exchange student room doing nothing/studying/drawing/sleeping. All my Japanese friends are jealous that I don’t have to stress about taking the tests at all and I just sit there. I’d be jealous of myself too. Nothing outstanding has happened. I’m just living my life here and trying to fit in as much as possible. Next month we only have two days off (sob) but in December we have a (almost) 5 week break so I’m pumped for that. I am also looking forward to the Japan Tour in March. We will travel to places all around Japan! Again I want to talk about the trains. Dude. They get SO packed. You don’t even know. People will try to fit in but then they’ll fall down because they can’t squeeze themselves in anymore. If you’re unlucky you get stuck in the middle where you’re literally being smashed by TWICE the train capacity! It’s pretty painful. Also, in Japan there are weird guys who will touch you on the train. You can’t see who it is or move to stop them because the train is so full. Sure, you can scream for help but it’s kind of impossible to get help cause first of all, you don’t even know who it was and second of all most people would probably just ignore you cause that’s the “mind your own business” culture here. It’s actually a big problem and it’s happened to me on quite a few occasions. There are “women only” cars but they are all the way at the front and I don’t have time to run all the way to the front of the train before the train comes and goes. I have said something a few times and they run away with embarrassment but most of the time I can’t do anything about it. Future Japanese exchange students should be aware of this. I try to stand against the doors or use my bag to block them. It’s also suggested that you have a safety pin so you can stab them with it and I think i’m going to get one since it happens so often. Anyways school is pretty… boring. Sorry to admit it but Japanese classroom life isn’t the highlight of my exchange. I usually just write stuff in my journal or study. I’ve taken up the art of sleeping now and it passes the time a lot more efficiently. We have switched over to our winter uniforms but it was 81 degrees today and I was so hot. My classmates are so weird. It was like 75 degrees and they were all complaining about it being cold so they turned the heater up to 87 degrees. Like what? We are all wearing sweaters and some of us are even wearing blazers! Why are we making it hotter in here!? I am hot at 75 degrees!!! Today I took an English exam. It’s really difficult. We were learning about food banks for the homeless and desertification in English. What will they ever need to know desertification for? English class is quite interesting though because occasionally the teacher will ask me to pronounce a word and then the class will repeat the word like 500 times. They were absolutely fascinated with the name Michael for like an hour. I feel like I’m homesick but I know that it’s not real homesickness because it’s weird things that I miss from home. I miss dollar bills and cheese and brownies.I really want to get a haircut but i’m afraid that they will cut it like all the girls have it here and I do NOT want that. They all have bangs and kindashortish/medium length hair. I’ve heard so many hair saloon horror stories here so I’m scared to try it. I believe my next host father is a hair stylist so maybe I could get it done by him. Looking forward to it~

Klamath Water Wars

Posted by William Schuberth
In the December issue of the Rotarian starting on page 30 there is an interesting story about a rotarian who was able to use some techniques he learned while  attending a Rotary International Convention in Birmingham, England to help bring together 42 competing groups that previously couldn't agree on the color of the sky. I would summarize  it for you in the bulletin, but it is about 10 pages in length and I am afraid I couldn't do it justice in a couple of short paragraphs. I suggest that if you have the time, take a few minutes and pick up the December Rotarian and look through it. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the quality and interest of the articles.  Its your organization and it s primary publication is a well written and often inspiring piece of literature.

CCH  Tag Days

Posted by William Schuberth on Nov 29, 2016

The results for Tag Days are not fully tallied as of the time of this publication.  The preliminary results are as follows; Wednesday was a little lower than last year, but Friday showed an uptrend. I know that while I was collecting at the tree lighting there were a lot of people that had tags and said that they had already  donated earlier in the day so I offered them the opportunity to donate once more because it was for a worthy cause and every thing collected would be going to the recipients and nothing was lost on administrative costs. I also gave them copies of our CCH schedule so they could volunteer  their services. Saturday collections were still being tallied as of this writing, so my guess is that they must really be big.  Laura will be giving a report on our efforts this
Friday at the regular meeting. Lets  hope we had a good showing because as we all know, "Its not nice to disappoint Laura". Thank you Laura for all the hard work and planning that you have devoted to CCH and especially  to Tag Days.

Veterans Day

Posted by William Schuberth on Nov 07, 2016
This Friday our meeting is on Veterans Day and one of our own members, Mike Iwanicki, will be our program. Mike has worked for several years representing the veterans of Mc Henry County and helping to see that they get the services they are entitled to for serving our country and protecting our liberties.  Veterans have risked their lives and in some cases given their lives in the many military actions that our country has been involved in over the years. It is important that we honor our veterans for these services and Mike is the man on the ground that is insuring that these persons are treated properly and given the care and treatment they deserve for the sacrifices they have made for our country. I am sure this will be one of our best programs of the year.

Thoughts on Increasing Membership

Posted by William Schuberth on Sep 26, 2016
The following is an excerpt from an article in the August Rotarian written by John F. Germ president of Rotary International.

"Whenever I tell a group of Rotarians that we need more willing hands, more caring hearts, and more bright minds to move our work forward, everyone applauds. But those hands, hearts, and minds won't magically appear in our clubs. We have to ask them to join. And an invitation to Rotary is something that only you can give. An invitation is a gift. It's saying to someone, "I think you have the skills, the talent, and the character to make our community better, and I want you to join me in doing that."

The key is when we find someone with the qualities that would make a good Rotarian, it is our job to invite them to learn more about Rotary, with the hope that they too will want to become a member of our great organization.

Disaster Relief in Louisiana

Posted by William Schuberth on Sep 06, 2016
District 6440 is currently poling the district membership to find out if any members are interested in volunteering to do a hands on trip to Louisiana to help those persons in the flood stricken areas.   The district also has a (501c3) set up to take monetary donations for flood relief in Louisiana. If you are interested in a hands on experience please  contact me in person or by email at billdisasterrelief@gmail.com.    If you would like to donate money to the cause through the district through our newly developed (501c3) you can do so by going to the following site     https://rotary6440.org/Sitepage/district-6440-charitable-fund-information. If you have any problem you can call me or email me at billdisasterrelief@gmail.com...The flood stricken area is not as large as the flood from Hurricane Katrina, but the affected areas received much more extensive damage especially the schools in Livingston Parish. About 16 schools were flooded out and only about 6-7 will be opening up in the next week. It will be a couple of months before the others will be able to open to the students because of the extensive damage.

Polio Setback in Nigeria

Posted by William Schuberth
There have been two detected cases of the WPV1 type of Polio virus in Nigeria in July. This is the first WPV1 detected in Nigeria since July 2014. A special response plan is currently being set up to deal with this new development. There is also an immunization day planned in Nigeria from October 18-26 which Jolene White has informed us about.  This shows how important it is to stay on top of our immunization plan in order to keep any spread in check immediately.

District Governor Visit

Posted on Aug 02, 2016
Governor Rick Rivkin delivered a very well planned presentation, with humor and poignancy.  He gave specific examples of how projects can start with one person and develop into international projects helping thousands (or millions in the case of polio plus).   Emphasising the 2016-17 theme of: Rotary Serving Humanity.

Live auction items and all items to be presented at the BEACH PARTY EVENT WERE TO BE TURNED IN LAST WEEK. IF YOU STILL HAVE SOMETHING THAT YOU HAVE NOT REPORTED IN CHECK WITH THE APPROPRIATE COMMITTEE AND SEE IF IT CAN STILL BE PUT ON THE ROSTER FOR SATURDAY'S EVENT. THIS IS OUR MAJOR FUND RAISER ALONG WITH THE REVERSE RAFFLE. THESE TWO EVENTS FUND OUR HUMANITARIAN ENDEAVORS FOR THE UP COMING ROTARY YEAR. IF WE DON'T MAKE THE MONEY THIS WEEKEND THEN  OUR ACTIVITIES FOR THE UP COMING YEAR WILL BE CURTAILED.
THIS WEEK'S MEETING WILL BE HELD AT BLDG "D" AT THE FAIRGROUNDS. BE PREPARED TO TURN A MUSTY OLD POLE BARN INTO A FESTIVE LOOKING PARTY PALACE. COME WITH IDEAS AND ENERGY AND WE WILL BE ABLE TO TRANSFORM BLDG "D" TO NEW LEVELS OF EXCITING FUND RAISING ENERGY.

The theme of this year's fundraiser will focus on how we are building community here and around the world.  For over 50 years, the club has influenced the lives of others across the globe via our youth exchange program and global service projects.  We educated our guests at last year's auction of "Why Rotary" and it's important this year to make the connection of how Rotarians and local donors reach beyond our community to create a better world.

Get your purchasing groups together to bid on: Chicago Bears tickets with overnight accommodations.  Chicago Cubs tickets.  Vacation to Belton Lodge.  Beer tasting and tour at Crystal Lake Brewing.  And the list goes on…

Skirt

So…This is Bill Schuberth’s spouse, Linda.  This is our President Tom Rogers.  Those that were in attendance know if the skirt was going on or going off.  And everything in between.  Now that I have your attention (all 48% of the Rotarians who opened last week’s bulletin), the other new flash (pun intended) is that Tom was wearing a TIE.  And his Rotary PIN.  Our fearless leader.
A big Thank you to Ann Hughes, Bill Schuberth and Mike Iwanicki who gave our club an excellent program on the Guatemala project.  All three have been to the area and seen firsthand of the need and the positive effects that Rotary has made.  Rotary has donated over $100,000 of dental equipment to Guatemala, set up over 20 computer labs, helped improve living condition in Ak Tenanit, a new village founded in 1992.  Ak Tenanit is about a hand up, not a hand out.  A tremendous amount of volunteers working with locals to improve living and learning conditions.

Hats off to the District 200 Education Foundation for providing opportunities to students that might not otherwise exist.  The Ed Foundation works diligently year ‘round to provide the funds to teachers who apply for the grant money.  This year’s fun (pun intended) raising event is at a NEW location – Starline in Harvard IL.
The event’s date is Saturday February 6th 2016.  Put it on your calendar!  And Happy New Year!

Christmas Clearing House

Posted on Dec 28, 2015
2015 CCH is in the books.  The Woodstock location baskets were all out in vehicles by 10:30 am.  Al Schmitt aka Alexander Haig capably filled in for Tom Nierman; who was at his daughter's college graduation.  The local food bank and AMVETS benefited from the returns that were unable to be delivered or were refused.  Once again, the community turned out with plenty of drivers to help us deliver the baskets.  The Wonder Lake delivery location at Greenwood School started slow with the need for more drivers and yet their deliveries were completed within an hour and a half.  Thank you to Joe Starzynski and his committee members for another year of outstanding service.  Over 1,100 families had their Christmas brightened due to the efforts of Christmas Clearing House and all those who pitched in and helped.  Strange as it may sound, hopefully that number decreases next year.  CCH is akin to golf; the lower the number the better.  Food for thought!

Kelsi Morefield

Posted by William Schuberth on Nov 18, 2015

Last Friday our club was treated to one of the most pleasant programs in a long time. We were able to witness first hand a skype telephone call with one of our outbound students. Kelsi Morefield the daughter of one of our past presidents is currently an exchange student in Austria. On Friday we were able to have a first hand account of Kelsi's life as an exchange student. she seemed to be really excited about her experiences abroad and the friends she has made in the last 3 months. Our club should be very proud of her ability to be a good ambassador for our country and especially our Rotary Club. Kelsi was radiating excitement and enthusiasm during the entire conversation on Skype. A young lady like Kelsi has the ability to change how the world looks at us. She is a great example of what the Rotary Exchange Program is all about. This year we have two really great exchange students. Both Sophie Rogers, Tom's daughter, and Kelsi are two of the best prepared exchange students we have had. They both have a working knowledge of the language of the country they are in and they are both sincerely grateful for the wonderful experience that Rotary has been able to provide for them. They also make our club look really good in the eyes of the rotary program.

The Children of La Hille

Posted by Luke Lohmeyer
This program was LIVING HISTORY and it was EXCELLENT.  Our speaker for October 30th was Walter Reed (91 years old by the way), local author, writing about his childhood experiences as a Nazi captive after World War II.  His upcoming book will be published November 16th, 2015.  If you would like to order a copy of the book call 800-848-6224.  Or check out Walter's website:  www.la-hille-children.com.

His given name was Werner Rindsberg and hearing his account first hand was a rare treat.  Fascinating.  Great job Jean Radford for securing this program.

10/23/2015 Speaker - Ade Onayemi

Wow! Great attendance last week for an excellent program.  Our guest speaker was a fellow Rotarian, Ade Onayemi, immediate past president of the Oak Park River Forest Noon Rotary Club, and current Assistant Governor of District 6450.  Ade gave us a wonderful history lesson on Nigeria, the importance of Rotary on his native country, and the impact of the Polio Plus Campaign.  It is amazing his passion and energy for Rotary!

Thank you Jean for finding this great program!

Go Cubs Go

Posted by Luke Lohmeyer on Oct 13, 2015
At last week’s meeting, Jim Campion initially and publicly tried to sway public opinion in the direction of forgiveness.  It was a deftly staged courtroom maneuver.  Seems each baseball season Jim (a sox fan) wagers with a select foursome who are CUB fans regarding which baseball team will win more games.  This year the CUBS won 21 more game than the sox and therefore Jim owed $21 per person.  As Jim tried to persuade the others to forgo the winnings, Jim was met with a quick a resounding PAY UP!  Fun at the ole ball park.

Earlier this year, the prediction was made that the Bulls, Hawks, Cubs, Sox and Bears would all qualify for the 2015 playoffs.  September came and the sox faltered.  Jim owes me $21 as well!  The Bears are rallying…

The definition of penultimate is something that is second to last or right before the last item in a series. Our president is keeping us on our toes!  Revival of the Word of the Day?  Remember Doc Johnson?  Rev Rogers has a nice ring to it.

Kudos to our club for the excellent attendance at the Rotary Chamber Mixer.  Thanks also to Golden Eagle Bank for being excellent hosts and securing a fine selection of sandwiches from local Woodstock businesses.  And there were some fine beverages available as well!  Of the non Rotarian guests present, I hope each guest was asked to consider Rotary.  Rev Rogers did an excellent job presenting Rotary to those in attendance.

The McHenry County Board voted to NOT place on the ballot the issue of whether townships should consolidate or not.  While not for or against township consolidation; had the issue been placed on the March 2016 ballot, plenty of information would have been supplied to the voting public by those who are for and against consolidation.  The public should have had the opportunity to vote.  Call your McHenry County Board members.  I did.

Triple Moon

Posted by Luke Lohmeyer on Sep 21, 2015
It's not often you get to see three lunar events in one night, but Sept. 27 will give you a chance.
If skies are clear, you'll be able to witness a harvest moon, supermoon and a blood moon eclipse - all in one night.
Eclipse:  A total lunar eclipse will be visible on the night of September 27. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the Earth's shadow, which makes it appear dark red in color.
Blood moon:  The reason the moon will appear red instead of its normal color is that the Earth blocks the direct white-colored sunlight that normally illuminates the moon. The moon does not completely disappear from sight because indirect sunlight still reaches it. The Earth’s atmosphere filters out most blue colored light, leaving the moon to appear red. This coloration leads many to refer to this phenomenon as a “blood moon.”
Harvest moon and Supermoon:  Something particularly special about the lunar eclipse is that this full moon is a Harvest Moon and a supermoon. A harvest moon is a full moon that occurs at the time closest to the autumnal equinox, and a supermoon is when a full or new moon occurs when the moon is at its closest approach to Earth. It also happens to be the closest supermoon of the year, which will make the moon appear larger than usual.  For the Chicagoland area:
Begins: Sun, Sep 27, 2015 at 7:11 PM
Maximum: Sun, Sep 27, 2015 at 9:47 PM
Ends: Mon, Sep 28, 2015 at 12:22 AM

Duration: 5 hours, 11 minutes

The next total lunar eclipse that will be visible in the eastern United States is not until January 20, 2019. So make sure you get outside to watch this spectacular event!

First Friday Social

Posted by Luke Lohmeyer on Sep 01, 2015
This Friday, September 4, 2015 kicks off the three day Labor Day weekend.  Why not start it off with a mug of your favorite drink at Ortmanns Red Iron Tavern.  On the corner of Church and Clay Streets!  It begins at 5:00 pm (or whenever the first Rotarians arrive) and ends about 6:30 (or whenever the last Rotarians leave).  Discuss Rotary.  Discuss which Chicago Pro Baseball team will make the playoffs.  Discuss the Old Courthouse on the Historic Woodstock Square.  Discuss whether we as a constituency should be able to vote on consolidating the townships in McHenry County from 17 to 8.  Quick-should a move such as this cost the taxpayer more or less?  Depends on where you live they say.  Call your county board member and tell them what you think.

Bulls, Hawks, Cubs, Sox, Bears

Posted by Luke Lohmeyer on Sep 01, 2015
In late winter, this author made the statement that all 5 sports teams would make the playoffs.  Within the next week, Derek Rose and Patrick Kane went on the injured reserve list (maybe they should have stayed on it...).  Anyway, those two teams made and now it is up to the baseball teams.  And then there are the Bears...  September and October will be the tell tale months for all three teams!

Rotarian Health Update

Posted by Luke Lohmeyer on Aug 11, 2015

Barry Goldberg
Just spoke with Margo. Barry is having a good week. He actually talked to me on the phone and wanted to know about Barndance. He visited Family Alliance this week. Margo said he's back to eating. He's lost 20 lbs in a short time frame. The pacemaker is doing well. Doctor said it's being using about 15% of the time. So it's definitely doing its job. I let her know that anytime Barry is having a good Friday to come on down to a Rotary meeting. No invitation required.

Words of wisdom for the New Rotary Year

Posted by William Schuberth on Jul 07, 2015
This was copied from Luke's excellent comments and ideas for the New Year.  I couldn't do any better, so here it is again.
Let us all work to support Rotary, New president Tom and his board.  Where are the board meetings going to be held this year?  Let’s all try and attend one more meeting than we did last year.  Even you perfect attendees!!!  Hats off to them as always.
Membership and fellowship is the success of our club.  The weekly meeting is the key.  Sit at different tables with different people.  I am guilty of sitting with some of the same people too often, but I just can’t seem to shake them…Ha!
Hey, let’s also remember to let the speaker know if we have to leave the meeting early.  Turn those cell phones on to vibrate.  Bring a guest.  Bring a potential new member.  Wear your Rotary shirt on Mondays – Thursdays; not on Friday.
Hey, who has inside access to Ryder Cup tickets?  Get them for next year’s auction!!!  Should we come up with a new theme or stick with Beach Party?  70’s?  Disco?  Western?  Costume party?
Here’s to the new year-Service above Self.

Fellow members of the Woodstock Noon Club,

Thank you for honoring me as a Five Time Paul Harris Fellow.  It is always a pleasure to visit clubs and explain how Rotary has not only helped me to understand the problems and needs of our great country, but how our Club endeavors to improve conditions locally and internationally.  Our successes  within the Exchange Student Program and Christmas Clearing House are outstanding.  I will proudly wear the Paul Harris Fellow Pin and, again, many thanks!

2015-16 Youth Exchange - Update

Posted on Jun 21, 2015
As of last Friday's meeting, we have a tentative first host family, just a few details to iron out.  Our next student will be arriving in early August from Brazil and we are still looking for host families.  It would be nice to have all the hosts lined up before he arrives.  Please contact Lynn Fiala if you can help.  Based on our current experiences, you will not be disappointed!

Some Like It Hot

Posted by Bill Schuberth on Jun 18, 2015
Phil Mc Kown gave a very informative presentation on the delights and the effects of Hot stuff. It is amazing to learn how hot something can be and that there is a scale that rates hot foods.  I was suprized to learn that Jalepenos peppers were not considered really hot. On the hot scale, they were only considered medium to mild. I did learn that you should never touch a hot pepper to your lips, because they are the most sensitive organ for sensing hot foods, also if you do eat something that is burning you up, don't drink water or alcohol, but try to drink milk or dairy products because the fats in the dairy products bind up the hot chemicals of the pepper.  Thanks Phil.  That was a very enlightening program and one which could come to our aid if we get too hot for our own good.

Pamela Altoff's Update on Illinois

Posted by Bill Schuberth on Jun 16, 2015
Last Friday we wore fortunate to have Pam Althoff give us an update on the state of the state as seen from her eyes as a state representative. It was quite a presentation which gave me  the impression that the problems of the state of Illinois are not soon to be solved. I only wish our legislators to decide to work for the good of their constituents and not just for their own longevity as politicians. We have a Republican Governor with the legislature controlled by the Democrats. this is a recipe for  a non productive government.  Perhaps in the next election some more seats in the legislature will be changed and some true governmental changes will actually start to occur.
